Can You Post a Negative Review of a Creator Course? Facts, Proof and Privacy

You can describe your own documented experience, but a truthful review is not a licence to fabricate accusations or expose private data. The U.S. FTC says the Consumer Review Fairness Act protects honest customer opinions against certain form-contract restrictions. Canadian review and defamation issues require province-specific advice; do not import the U.S. Act into Canada. FTC: honest review rights↗
Before you act#
These articles address consumer purchases in the United States and Canada; they are not a single North American legal regime. In Canada, provincial or territorial contract remedies vary; Ontario examples are labelled. In the United States, state laws and the facts of the transaction may add or change remedies. A report to a regulator is not an individual refund order. If you bought a course primarily for an existing business, consumer-law coverage may be different. Check your agreement and applicable local law; seek legal advice for a material loss.
Use an evidence-first format#
Avoid claims you cannot verify#
Do not write that all testimonials are fake or that the creator committed a crime unless you have reliable grounds and appropriate legal review. Identify allegations as allegations, but know that adding “allegedly” does not cure a misleading overall impression. Avoid doxxing, family details, private addresses and full payment account numbers.
Keep the refund process separate#
Send the merchant a written refund request and contact the payment provider while the dispute is fresh. In the U.S., the FTC says you may share honest reviews even when negative; its protection from restrictive form-contract clauses does not decide every defamation dispute. When the creator threatens a lawsuit#
Preserve the exact review, edits, receipts and threat; pause escalating posts and speak to a lawyer in the applicable state or province if the claim is serious. Consider whether a neutral, dated account of events serves readers better than a broad accusation.
Frequently asked questions#
